Arvada Center raises nearly $8,000 for retired religious

March `Late Nite Catechism' performances earn donations for local nuns

Last month's hit production of the one-woman comedy "Late Nite Catechism" at the Arvada Center raised $7,900 for retired religious in the Denver community. The monies were distributed to Mother Cabrini Shrine, Little Sisters of the Poor and the Sisters of Loretto.

"Late Nite Catechism," which ran March 10-17 at the Arvada Center, featured Amanda Hebert as the irrepressible "Sister," who teaches a hilarious but theologically sound adult catechism class to the audience. At the conclusion of each performance, Sister makes an announcement that donations will be taken at the theater exits, with all the money going to retired nuns in the area. This is done across the country, wherever "Late Nite Catechism" is performed.

"What a great way to show what the Arvada Center's about," said Kathy Kuehn, Arvada Center performing arts director. "We're committed to making a difference in our community. This time, we were able to do that both through a fun, entertaining show, and through the generosity of our patrons. We're thrilled to be able to make these contributions to women who dedicated their lives to serving others."

The audience members of the twelve Arvada Center performances were extremely generous. On more than one occasion a $100 bill was found in the collection. One audience member made out several $5 checks to specific associations for retired nuns throughout the nation.

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is the metro area's 12th largest cultural attraction, devoted to all aspects of the arts. Located two-and-a-half miles north of Interstate 70 on Wadsworth Boulevard, the theater is just 20 minutes from downtown Denver. For more information on upcoming shows and arts events, call the box office at 303-431-3939, or visit the center's web site at www.arvadacenter.org.
