Local students earn honors
Local students make Dean's List
Several local students were named to the fall 2001 Dean's List at Franciscan University of Steubenville.
They include: Stephanie Anaya, daughter of Michael and Diana Anaya of Aurora. A junior sociology major, Anaya is a 1999 graduate of Machebeuf Catholic High School.
Ryan Fleming, son of Gerald and Kathleen Fleming of Denver. A junior biology major, Fleming is a 1999 graduate of Machebeuf Catholic High School.
Katie Genereux, daughter of Dennis and Theresa Genereux of Englewood. A junior history and political science major, Katie is a 1999 graduate of Seton Home Study School.
Marija Weeden, daughter of Marshall and Katherine Weeden of Littleton. A junior theology major with a concentration in religious education, Weeden is a 2000 graduate of Lakewood High School.
Franciscan University of Steubenville, a Catholic liberal arts university in Steubenville, Ohio, has an enrollment of 2,200 and offers more than 30 majors. To qualify for Dean's List honors, students must earn a 3.4 grade point average and carry 15 credit hours.
Local student makes Dean's List at Regis U
Maura Smallwood has been named to Regis University's School of Health Care Dean's List. Smallwood is a 1998 graduate of Holy Family High School. She resides at Regis University's Romero House, an inner-city mission community dedicated to peace and justice.
Student earns honors at CUA
Kathryn McCallen of Englewood has been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the Freshman Honor Society of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Phi Eta Sigma was founded in 1923 to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning. The Catholic University chapter was founded in 1929 and remains one of the oldest of the more than 300 local chapters in the society. Catholic University students qualify for membership by earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher by the end of their freshman year with a regular course load of 15 credits per semester during both semesters with no pass/fail classes.
The Catholic University of America is unique as the national university of the Catholic Church and the only higher education institution founded by the U.S. bishops. Established in 1887 as a graduate and research center, the university began offering undergraduate education in 1904. Today the campus has approximately 5,500 students from all 50 states and nearly 100 countries enrolled in schools of religious studies, philosophy, law, arts and sciences, engineering, social service, nursing, music, library and information science, and architecture and planning.
Mullen students earn kudos
Lily Van Buskirk, a senior at Mullen High School, attended The National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) March 5 to March 10 in Washington, D.C. The NYLC is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.
Van Buskirk was among 350 outstanding National Scholars from around the country to attend the conference.
Van Buskirk, the daughter of Tom and Mary Ann Van Buskirk of Denver, is the co-president of the Mullen High School student body. She has held leadership positions all four years at Mullen as well as being a member of the National Honor Society and playing sports. The Van Buskirks are parishioners at St. Francis de Sales, Denver.
Caleb Heldt, a senior at Mullen, was recently named State Farm Most Valuable Participant. The MVP award is given to two students in Colorado each week for their academic records and achievements in a Colorado High School Activities Association sanctioned activity.
Heldt has participated in varsity men's soccer while maintaining a 3.9 grade point average.
