Archbishop to celebrate Mass in honor of Blessed Kateri

Mass at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to include Indian traditions

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., will celebrate a Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in honor of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks, at 6:30 p.m. April 14.

All are invited to join the archdiocesan Kateri Catholic Community in this special Sunday liturgy. The Mass will include sacred Indian drumming and singing, and incensing with sage and cedar. Members of the Kateri community will wear traditional tribal dress.

Blessed Kateri is the patroness of the Kateri Catholic Community, which consists of Indians from more than 20 different tribal backgrounds who live in the greater Denver-metro area.

"Blessed Kateri's deep piety and faithfulness to her Catholic faith brought her ridicule and persecution in her 17th century Mohawk tribal village," said Deacon Bill Ward, administrator for the Kateri community. "In this regard, she is a model for our present-day Catholic Church, which is also called to be the light of Christ, proclaiming the splendor of truth in the face of great resistance from the secular world, which does not want to hear it."
