Mount Carmel parish to hold St. Joseph Table and Desolata Service

March events celebrate Italian traditions of northwest Denver church

Mount Carmel Parish in northwest Denver invites all to two upcoming events that celebrate Italian traditions: the 25th annual St. Joseph Table held the weekend of March 16-17 and a Desolata Service to honor Mary on Friday, March 22.

The festive St. Joseph Table pays homage to St. Joseph. The event offers thanksgiving for the saint's intercession for past blessings and asks that blessings continue in the future.

A table will be filled with an abundant variety of foods prepared by parishioners. There also will be homemade breads and cookies for sale. Each participant will receive a goodie bag that includes a small bread, a holy card, and fava beans. The items have all been blessed by a priest. Italian legend holds that a fava bean in your pantry and in your wallet will ensure that neither will go empty.

This celebration of food and sharing will begin with the blessing of the table immediately following the 4 p.m. Mass Saturday, March 16. It commences again 11 a.m. Sunday, March 17. All activities will take place in the parish hall, 3517 Navajo St., Denver.

Generosity marks this day, as it did the character of St. Joseph himself. There is no set fee or obligation for this feast. Donations will be accepted. All monies collected are used to provide emergency aid to needy people.

A Desolata Service, an Italian tradition of the Servite friars who staff the parish, is scheduled 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, the Servite feast of Our Lady of Compassion, Mary at the Foot of the Cross. Guest preacher is Father Joseph Chamblin, O.S.M. The parish choir will sing the traditional Oratorio composed for the Desolata by Jesuit Father A.S. Diminichino. The service will be held in the church at 3549 Navajo St.
