Sister Antonella Gonzales, S.C.L., dies at 67
Sister of Charity of Leavenworth Antonella Gonzales died Nov. 15 at Ross Hall Motherhouse, Leavenworth, Kan.
Mary Ann Gonzales was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Denver. She was one of five children of Tony M. and Sadie Lucero Gonzales. She graduated from Mitchell Grade School, Cole Junior High School and Manuel High School. She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Aug. 30, 1961.
As Sister Antonella, she made her profession of vows on Sept. 2, 1963. After profession, she served as a child-care worker at St. Vincent Home, Topeka, Kan.; St. Joseph Home, Helena, Mont.; and Mount St. Vincent Home, Denver.
She served in Home Health Care at St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center, Grand Junction. She was a receptionist at St. Joseph Hospital, Denver.
Because of poor health, she retired to the Ross Hall Community, Leavenworth, in May 1998. While in Ross Hall, through her heroic effort and desire to be of service, she served as a part-time switchboard operator at the Motherhouse. Her novitiate members said that she was "the heart" of their group. Survivors include a sister, Madeline, and her husband Alex D. Martinez, Denver; a brother, David Gonzales, and his wife Yvonne, Denver; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A vigil was held for her Nov. 18 in Ross Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was held for her in Ross Chapel Nov. l9. Interment followed in the Motherhouse Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. 4th St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
A memorial Mass will be offered for Sister Antonella in the Chapel of Mount St. Vincent Home, 4159 Lowell Blvd., Denver, 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12.
