Catholic Charities awarded grant
Funding enables agency to help children get health insurance
Catholic Charities of the archdioceses of Denver and Pueblo have received a $120,000, two-year grant from the Caring for Colorado Foundation to dramatically increase the number of Colorado children enrolled in the Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) health insurance and Medicaid programs.
CHP+ and Medicaid provide health insurance to children in low- to moderate-income families. Approximately 170,000 children in Colorado are uninsured and 70,000 of those are eligible for public programs but are not signed up.
Catholic Charities' Children's Health Matters program will provide information and application assistance to help families get health care for their children. Many of the families targeted to receive information are low-income families who are struggling to make ends meet.
"Our challenge is to get past families' distrust of government and government programs so they can get adequate health care," said Steffanie Clothier, public policy director at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver. "It's crucial that children have access to the health care they need."
Clothier said families need more help to meet their medical needs now that Colorado's economy is declining.
"For many families, programs like this can fill the gap when they have nowhere else to turn," she said.
The Children's Health Matters project will serve families in the Archdiocese of Denver from Denver to Wyoming and west along Interstate 70 to Utah. Pueblo's Catholic Charities will serve families in Pueblo and 11 counties in rural Southern Colorado.
Catholic Charities agencies serve people of all faiths, including children in crisis, the homeless and families in need.
