Father Thomas Keating to speak at mini-retreat

Co-founder of `centering prayer' practice featured Nov. 10

At a time when so many are turning to God for solace and strength, Contemplative Outreach of Colorado features Trappist Father Thomas Keating, founder of Contemplative Outreach, Ltd., as the guest speaker at its "Fall Mini-Retreat," 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Denver.

Father Keating, who was in New York on Sept. 11, will reflect upon the healing power of God in prayer and action. The day of prayer includes a morning presentation and closing Lectio Divina and homily by Father Keating, three periods of centering prayer, and time for solitude.

Centering prayer is a method of contemplative prayer designed to open the mind and heart, beyond thoughts, words and emotions by faith. It is drawn from ancient prayer practices of the Christian contemplative heritage, notably the Fathers and Mothers of the Desert, the monastic practice of Lectio Divina (praying the Scriptures), the spiritual classic "The Cloud of Unknowing," and mystic saints John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila.

Three Trappist monks — Father Keating, Father William Meninger and Father Basil Pennington — distilled the practice into a simple method of prayer in the 1970s.

Contemplative Outreach, Ltd., established by Father Keating in 1984 to bring the method out of the monastic milieu to those in contemporary society, is now a worldwide spiri-tual network of individuals and small faith communities com-mitted to renewing the contemplative dime-nsion of the Gospel in everyday life.

Although a centering prayer practice is helpful, it is not required for this spiritually dynamic event. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in McCadden Hall. Cost is $25. Bring a sack lunch, beverages provided. Pre-registration by Wednesday, Nov. 7, is preferred, however, walk-in registrations are welcomed. Our Lady of Lourdes is at 220 S. Logan St.

For information and registration, call Contemplative Outreach of Colorado at 303-698-7729.
