Spring pilgrimage to Greece, Rome
Tour to follow footsteps of St. Paul, Holy Father
An 11-day pilgrimage following in the footsteps of St. Paul and, most recently, the Holy Father embarks May 14, 2002. Experienced pilgrimage guides Jesuit Father Robert DeRouen, Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Agnes Ann Gardt and Sister of Charity Associate Tom Carr will lead the journey.
The tour begins when pilgrims land in Athens, Greece. In Athens, the pilgrims will be reminded of Paul's famous speech "Men of Athens" and will visit the old city of Corinth, where Paul preached, studied and prayed for over a year.
From Athens, the group will board ship, setting sail through the Greek Isles and the Aegean Sea. They will visit sites important to the Catholic faith, including Ephesus, Rhodes, Kusadasi and Patmos. Ephesus is the center of early Christianity and where Paul spent two years. Patmos is where St. John received inspiration for the book of Revelation.
The pilgrims also will enjoy land excursions on Ephesus, Rhodes and Patmos. Once the group completes their journey through Greece, they will spend three days in Rome. They will attend a papal audience with Pope John Paul II and visit the four major churches of Rome: St. Peter's Basilica, the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major.
At St. Peter's the pilgrims will see the wonderful art treasures in the Vatican Museum, visit Raphael's Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. Venturing out into the city of Rome, they will visit the catacombs, the Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and other famous landmarks.
Father DeRouen will celebrate Mass daily, including liturgies at the Holy sites along the journey. Local tour guides will be present at each location. This is the fourth pilgrimage organized and led by Father DeRouen, Sister Gardt and Tom Carr. An informational gathering is scheduled Oct. 21 at Regis University. Call Sister Agnes Ann Gardt at 303-832-4635 or Tom Carr at 720-841-7899 for more information.
