Regis president to address First Friday Forum
All invited to networking, faith-building group Nov. 2
All are invited to deepen their love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus by joining in the next First Friday Forum, Nov. 2 at the John Paul II Center, 1300 S. Steele Street in Denver.
The gathering begins with a 7 a.m. Mass, followed by a continental breakfast featuring an address by Jesuit Father Michael Sheeran, president of Regis University.
Regis University is the recognized leader in ongoing education for working professionals in the Rocky Mountain Region. Regis alumni are especially invited to attend the forum.
Bill Fortune, a member of the board of Regis University, and founding chair of the Seeds of Hope educational trust, will introduce Father Sheeran at the continental breakfast. Fortune is also a member of Legatus, the primary sponsor of the First Friday Forum.
Father Sheeran became the 23rd president of Regis University on Jan. 1, 1993. He had served as academic vice president of Regis since 1982. In August 1993, Father Sheeran hosted the first meeting between Pope John Paul II and President Bill Clinton at Regis University.
Father Sheeran received his doctorate in politics from Princeton University in 1977. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1957 and was ordained in 1970. He also holds a licentiate (European equivalent of a master's degree) in sacred theology, a licentiate in philosophy, a master's degree in political science, a master's degree in moral and pastoral theology and a bachelor's degree in philosophy and letters.
The First Friday Forum is designed to help people achieve a deeper level of spirituality in their daily work. Sponsors include Legatus of Colorado, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Foundation and the
Communications Secretariat of the Archdiocese of Denver.
The gathering offers Catholics the opportunity to meet others interested in living their faith. Networking will be encouraged and educational materials provided.
In 1673, Jesus Christ appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and revealed to her that he had chosen her to foster devotion to the Sacred Heart. Throughout the rest of her life, St. Margaret Mary shared Christ's desire that the faithful would make reparation for their sins and the sins of the world by honoring his Sacred Heart on the First Friday of the month. To do so, Catholics are encouraged to do one or more of the following: attend Mass, spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, make an act of consecration to the Sacred Heart, or receive the sacrament of confession.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a source of spiritual strength for Catholics throughout the world.
Bishop Jose Gomez, auxiliary bishop of Denver, will be the celebrant and speaker for the Dec. 7 First Friday Forum.
