Deacon who served 23 years dies
Rev. Mr. Winfield S. Power of Denver, a thoughtful man who exhibited a zest for life, died July 9. He was 82.
Born Aug. 28, 1918, in New Orleans, he was ordained a deacon April 15, 1978, by Archbishop James V. Casey.
He performed diaconal ministry at the Bethlehem Center, St. Joseph Parish in Golden, the Veterans Administration Hospital in Grand Junction and for the Charismatic Renewal Group. He retired from active ministry in 1992.
"He never forgot birthdays or anniversaries," his wife Marjorie said. "He had a big smile and a glad handshake that people will always remember him for. He was enthusiastic he was into life."
An avid bowler and Denver Bronco fan, Deacon Power also enjoyed fishing and public speaking. He was a retired credit manager. A World War II veteran, who took part in the China, Burma and India theater as an Army corporal, one of his favorite assignments as a deacon was at the Veterans Hospital. He also liked marriage preparation, his wife said.
Deacon Power is survived by his wife and seven children: John (Jan) Power, Aurora; Richard (Myra) Power, Brighton; Kathy Power, Oregon; Mary (John) Whittaker, Aurora; Joan Power, Aurora; Claudia (George) Jansen, Denver; and Robert Power, Denver. Other survivors include brother-in-law Father Theodore Haas of the Colorado Springs diocese, 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The deacons of the archdiocese gathered July 13 at Queen of Peace Church in Aurora to pray the Office of the Dead for their brother deacon. Recitation of the rosary and Memorial Mass concelebrated by Father Martin Lally and Father Haas followed. Bishop José Gomez also was present. Interment was at Fort Logan Cemetery July 16. Memorial contributions may be made to the Archbishop's Catholic Appeal.
