DeGettes cancellation inhospitable

As a practicing Catholic and a Catholic college graduate, I am appalled, disgusted and irked at the canceling of the speech of Congresswoman Diana DeGette.

She has been a champion for children's issues, many of which our Church approves.

Our Holy Father has traveled to many places where he was not wanted, but he has always been treated with honor and respect.

I feel what was done was unjustified.

DeGette cancellation right

I was encouraged to see that the archdiocese withdrew their invitation to pro-abortion Diana DeGette to be the main speaker at the 2nd Annual Mary Lucy Downey Award Dinner. It's important to be consistent in our actions. What we believe and what we do must go hand-in-hand. I haven't seen anyone who supports the death penalty booked at an archdiocesan event because of all of the other "good things" they might do. Why would it be a "disgrace" to be consistent?

I'd like to see the Archbishop's Guild act in a similar manner the next time they are preparing a fundraiser and booking talent. The recent "Hearts and Hands Outstretched" event featured Lannie Garrett, a local vocalist who is a supporter of Planned Parenthood. She has, and continues to be, a mainstay performer at their "Choice Affairs" fundraisers.

The life issue is the fundamental issue upon which all others are built. The archbishop has been quite clear in articulating this timeless teaching. Perhaps those who coordinate these events (and therefore represent the archdiocese) need to be more formed in the teaching of the Church before taking on that responsibility.

Garrett not good

My friends and I found the Lannie Garrett performance at the Archbishop's Guild Spring Luncheon held at the Brown Palace Hotel on April 21 to be tasteless and inappropriate for that occasion.

We, as Catholic men and women, hope it is possible to find quality entertainment and still be enjoyable.

Execution and abortion

Let's get back to reality! On Monday, June 11 in Terre Haute, Ind. and other parts of the United States approximately 4,000 abortions took place.

Surely God will not continue to bless a nation that kills its children.

The 50-plus million Catholic voters in the U.S. could have overturned Roe vs. Wade in a short time by putting into office pro-life candidates, but it is never too late.

We have less than one-and-a-half years before the next national election so the time is now for our great Catholic Archdiocese of Denver and the Denver Catholic Register to inform our people that a vote for a pro abortion candidate is participating in the culture of death.

Fasting proposal

I would be grateful if the archdiocese would publish a statement in response to the excellent suggestion by your readers in your April 18 and May 9 issues that we adopt a serious program of fasting to combat the culture of death.

With all due respect to your advertisers, may I suggest that our fasting include abolishing school- and parish-organized tours to commercial gambling casinos?

Greetings from Missouri

Though my sister is the only one I know in the Denver area, I love to read the Register, which comes to Conception Seminary Library. I get it second-hand each time new issues arrive, so I do read it late. The columns by the archbishop are just filled with a true shepherd's loving and wise words. How blessed is Denver Archdiocese!

We are very excited also about Bishop Gomez. All in all, your paper is a joy and an inspiration. Thank you for a job well done. God Bless!
