Native priest to retire

Metro-area pastor gives 49 years service

Father John Joseph McGinn, parochial victor at St. Thomas More, has been granted retirement status effective June 20, according to the Office of Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.

Father McGinn was born in Denver on April 13, 1927. He attended Regis High School, and then went on to St. Thomas Seminary from 1945 to 1952. Archbishop Urban J. Vehr ordained Father McGinn to the priesthood on June 7, 1952.

Father McGinn was first assigned as assistant pastor of St. James Church. He went on to serve as pastor at a number of parishes, including St. John's in Yuma, Guardian Angels in northwest Denver, Church of the Ascension in Montbello and St. Louis in Louisville, where he served for a dozen years.

He served as associate pastor at St. Mark in Westminster, as parochial vicar pro-tem at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Denver and as parochial vicar at the neighboring Holy Ghost.

Father McGinn has served six years at St. Thomas More.

A reception is scheduled after morning Masses (7:30, 9, 10:30 and noon) June 16 for those who would like to say farewell.

Father McGinn recalled wanting to be a priest from the time he was a boy attending St. Catherine's Grade School in northwest Denver.

"I've loved it," he said. "I thank God that He called me."
