Register wins 7 Catholic press awards
Paper honored for `general excellence,' 100th anniversary issue, Spanish section
The Denver Catholic Register garnered seven newspaper awards at the 2001 Catholic Press Association convention held May 25 in Dallas.
The Register's 100th anniversary issue featuring stories about the paper's past and present tied with an issue of The Catholic Spirit, St. Paul, Minn., for second place in the "best one-shot special section" category.
"The Denver Catholic Register presented an engaging history of a fascinating Catholic newspaper," the judges' critique read. "The story of its legendary editor Msgr. Matthew Smith encapsulates not only a history of one newspaper, but also an important part of the history of the Catholic press in general. This was an exceptional job."
Register general manager Greg Kail and advertising manager Ann Bush won second place in the "best new media kit" category.
In the "general excellence" category, which judges a paper's overall efforts at writing, design, layout and photos, the Register won honorable mention. The Register also received an honorable mention award for "best illustration" for a Hearts on Fire cover illustration by Ken Keegan and Bob Linn.
El Pueblo Católico, the Spanish language section of the Register won three awards. Rossana Goñi, editor of El Pueblo, won second place in the "best writing on a local/regional event" category for the story "Radio KBNO," about a local Spanish language radio station. Goñi also won an honorable mention in the "best lead article" category for the story "El señor de los milagros" about Our Lord of the Miracles, an image of Christ highly venerated in Peru and by Peruvian immigrants.
El Pueblo also received a second place award in the "best column general commentary" category for columns by Mar Muñoz-Visoso, Father Jorge Rodríguez and Luis Fernando Figari.
