Mimes to perform Gospel of John

Catholic Biblical School mimes in 12th year

For the 2001 Lenten season, mimes from the Catholic Biblical School will portray "The Story of Jesus as Told in the Gospel of John" at parishes across the archdiocese. The popular one-hour performance includes mime, music and narration.

The mime project started at the suggestion of Cardinal J. Francis Stafford when he encouraged the Biblical School to proclaim the Scriptures in creative ways designed to reach an audience beyond themselves. Sister Dorothy Jonaitis took up the challenge, establishing Biblical School mime troupes. In 11 years, over 250 performances have been presented to parishes, nursing homes, prisons and other churches.

The program helps everyone grasp the message of the Gospel, as it portrays Jesus' ministry through the resurrection. Audiences have responded positively to past performances, with many parishes reporting that the show is especially beneficial to religious education students, RCIA participants and Confirmation candidates, organizers said.
