Register 101 on St. Paddy's Day
The Register celebrates its 101st birthday on St. Patrick's Day. Because the paper debuted on St. Patrick's Day, the cover of the March 17, 1900, issue was printed in green ink. In honor of the paper's birthday, we have run the Register flag in green.
At peak circulation in the 1950s, the Register published some 35 diocesan newspapers. It was the largest single religious newspaper in the world.
Changes in technology have made it possible for bishops to publish their own diocesan newspapers. Today, the Register boasts 91,000 subscribers.
