Events planned to welcome bishop-elect
The faithful are invited to attend celebrations including prayer, music and food, to officially welcome Bishop-elect José Gomez to the diocese on March 25 and 26, organizers said.
The events begin with a Solemn Prayer Service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception 3 p.m. March 25. Because Cathedral seating is limited to 800, seating for an additional 1,000 will be available at the plaza adjacent to the Cathedral. The diocese is transforming the plaza into an enclosed arena via a large tent. The venue is being called "Celebration Plaza."
Those inside the tent will participate in the prayer service via a large screen closed circuit television broadcast. A reception in the tent will follow the bilingual prayer service. The reception will feature ethnic entertainment and light refreshments. Bishop-elect Gomez will attend the reception, organizers said.
The faithful also are invited to attend the Bishop's Ordination Mass scheduled 1:30 p.m. March 26 at the Cathedral. However, seating inside the Cathedral is by ticket only, organizers said. Tickets have all been distributed and cannot be requested, organizers said.
Additional seating will again be provided at Celebration Plaza, where the faithful will participate in the Mass via a large screen broadcast. Holy Communion will be distributed at the appropriate time. A reception with the new bishop will follow the Mass, organizers said.
