Catholics on American continent called to unity

Half of the world's Catholic population lives in Latin America, many of them in urgent economic need. Meanwhile, Catholics in North America find themselves immersed in the wealthiest culture in history.

How can the Church in America — both North and South — create a common, fruitful Gospel witness for the wider world? And what does the future hold for Catholics in an age of fundamentalist proselytizing, political unrest and consumer materialism?

Alejandro Bermúdez will address these and related issues in a special Jubilee Year seminar, Thursday evening, November 9, at 7:15 p.m. in Bonfils Hall at the John Paul II Center. Bermúdez, director of ACI-Prensa, the largest Catholic news agency in Latin America, has also served as an information adviser to the Peruvian Catholic bishops' conference and a variety of other Latin American and Vatican Church leaders. His work appears frequently in Our Sunday Visitor and other international Catholic publications.

Bermúdez will speak on "The Church in America, North and South: what the future holds after John Paul II." He will present his formal remarks in English and answer questions in English and Spanish.

A second key Jubilee Year seminar — this one on science and faith — takes place just a few days later.

Rev. Philip Larrey, professor at Our Lady of the New Advent Theological Institute and a dynamic speaker on issues of religion and science, will speak on Tuesday evening, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Bonfils Hall at the John Paul II Center. Please note the revised start time: 7:30 p.m., not 7:15 p.m.

Father Larrey will address "God and Schrödinger's Cat: faith, science and culture after the Quantum Revolution." Quantum physics has challenged some of science's basic assumptions about nature, and its long term effect on popular culture, notions of reality and even our conception of God could be massive. Science and faith both impact each of our daily lives in hundreds of ways. Don't miss this compelling presentation.

Admission to both seminars is free. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
