All invited to Philippine cultural celebration
The Philippine Heritage Foundation for the Performing Arts presents "Ibong Adarna, a Philippine Legend," at 6 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Houston Fine Arts Center, 7111 Montview Blvd., in Denver. General admission is $15, children under 12, $7.50.
"Ibong Adarna" (ibon means bird) is one of the most popular legends in the Philippines. It tells of the story of a Datu or chieftain, a widower, who, despite his vast wealth, looked upon his three sons as his most valuable treasure. One day, he fell ill and the Babaylan (Shaman) diagnosed his ailment as a bad liver caused by a spell cast by a disgruntled Diwata (Fairy) who has been offended by his failure to offer the yearly gifts of rice cakes at the village temple.
The Datu had only ten days to live, unless the spell could be broken by the sweet and melodious song of Ibong Adarna, a bird that dwelt in the enchanted forest. None of the village braves wanted to take the risk of capturing Ibong Adarna. There was a grave danger to whoever tried to catch it to be turned into stone. Thus, the three sons were forced to undertake the mission.
"Ibong Adarna a Philippine legend" tells, in dance form, of the adventures of the three sons in the enchanted forest.
