Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
We Americans usually take our physical security, adequate food and medical care, and the right to worship freely, for granted. The Catholics of Sudan enjoy none of these basic elements of human dignity.
The people of southern Sudan are currently locked in a struggle just to survive. Sudan's fundamentalist Muslim government is waging a war on the people and the Church which denies religious freedom, attacks families and children, and seeks to coerce an entire culture into accepting Islam or facing extinction.
I invite and strongly encourage all Catholics and other people of good will in northern Colorado to attend a special screening of The Hidden Gift, a documentary on the situation in Sudan. The 84-minute film was edited from 37 hours of extraordinary footage shot during two apostolic and relief visits in 1998-99 to the Nuba Mountains and Dinka flatlands in southern Sudan.
This important film will be shown at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening, October 25, in Bonfils Hall at the John Paul II Center.
Bishop Macram Max Gassis of Sudan will be present to introduce the film and answer questions. Please make every effort to attend this screening. And please keep Bishop Gassis and the Catholic people of Sudan in your daily prayers.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Denver
