Everyone is invited to a Mass 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception during which a new altar will be dedicated.
Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., will dedicate the new altar with sacred chrism, the same oil used in baptism, confirmation and holy orders. The Mass will include a Litany of Supplication (formerly called the Litany of Saints) and other special prayers.
“The new altar is a wonderful statement of purpose for the Cathedral Basilica and the many that come there for prayer and worship,” said Msgr. Thomas Fryar, cathedral pastor. “It is more in keeping with the original style of architecture than the current one, and will give renewed dignity to the liturgical celebrations. The focal point of any worship celebration in a Catholic Church is the altar, and having one of beauty and majesty draws fitting attention to the mystery and miracle about which it speaks.”
The new altar is made of marble and comes from Spain. The altar installation is the first of several renovations planned for the cathedral to ready it for its 100th dedication anniversary in the year 2012. The Mass at which it will be dedicated precedes a gala marking the cathedral’s 95th anniversary. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the cathedral’s preservation and renovation efforts.
“At the cathedral, we see the new altar as a symbol of our intent to renew and enhance the wonderful dignity and splendor of the building itself, as we approach its 100th anniversary,” said Msgr. Fryar.
The cathedral is located at the corner of Colfax Avenue and Logan Street in downtown Denver.
