A Greeting

September 17, 2000
Magness Arena, University of Denver

As all of you celebrate this holy Jubilee Year marking the two millenniums of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ into this world and the establishment of His holy Church, I greet each of you on behalf of the Greek Orthodox people of my Diocese in Colorado and throughout the plains and mountain states.

Truly this is a time of joy and jubilation. It is the same celebration which came into the world on that holy night when angelic voices rang out singing, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and goodwill to all people. "This, as we know, took place in fulfillment of God's invitation to the holy Mother of God by Gabriel the Archangel who cried out to her, "Rejoice, you who are full of grace; the Lord is with you."

Today, we of the Orthodox churches, your friends and neighbors, rejoice with you in fraternal love, and noetically and spiritually celebrate along with you the fulfillment of God's promise of salvation for His people.

Today, even in the face of dire events, catastrophic upheavals, and great tragedies in nature and among peoples, we stand together confidently and with unwavering faith, knowing that the generations and the years are unfolding according to the prophetic promises of the Lord. We look forward to His glorious appearing and His coming Kingdom, where joy and peace and love will reign forever.

May each of you and every person, from every walk of life, from every tradition and every tongue and every nation, who claims Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and Redeemer, celebrate with spiritual joy this Second Millennium jubilee.

Moreover, as we enter into the new century, we will continue to await a new heaven and a new earth in which God's righteousness will dwell. There God will wipe away every tear; for there will be no more death, nor sorrow, nor weeping, nor pain. For He as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, shall reign among His people forever.

This is your legacy and the legacy of our holy Christian faith. May we continue, therefore, to hold fast to these truths as we go forth into the new era.
