Statement from Archbishop Charles J. Chaput

on appointment of
Bishop Michael Sheridan as
coadjutor bishop of Colorado Springs

December 4, 2001

"Bishop Hanifen shared with me his desire for a coadjutor some months ago, so today's news is not entirely a surprise. But in Bishop Sheridan, he gets an especially good brother and assistant.

I've known Bishop Michael Sheridan for 16 years, even longer than I've been a bishop myself. He's a man of energy, warmth, great talent and deep faith. He'll be a tremendous help to Bishop Hanifen as coadjutor, and when the time comes for Bishop Hanifen to retire, Bishop Sheridan willbuild on the wonderful foundation he leaves.

This is a great day for Bishop Hanifen, the Church in Colorado Springs and Catholics throughout the Denver Province. I know the priests and people of the Archdiocese of Denver will join Bishop Gomez and myself in welcoming Bishop Sheridan enthusiastically."
